"Laughs, tears, and excitement. This is the real Tour De France." - Rupert Guinness, Sydney Daily Telegraph
"Outrageously Entertaining!" - Phil Liggett 'Voice Of Cycling'
"DETOUR DE FRANCE. Enjoyable alternative to the hard-edged Tour de France documentaries like Hell on Wheels and Overcoming, a group of Australians trek to France in 2005 to cover the event and have fun (and drinks!) along the way. The film is laced with amusing, to camera, commentary by the trio (including Denis Donohue) and is sharply directed by Dan Jones. The film also features surprising interviews with Lance Armstrong, Ron Howard (in Paris filming The Da Vinci Code), Sheryl Crow and John Kerry. Also noteworthy is the excursion to the Moulin Rouge and some rare glimpses inside this stalwart variety event. You definitely do not have to be a cycling fan to be won over by this film." - FILM REVIEW Peter Krausz, Chair of the Australian Film Critics Association,This film offers a fascinating look inside the world's biggest annual sporting event. The film focuses on three Australians reporting on the world famous cycling event; two are journalists and one is definitely not, but he eats and drinks like one. Ironically, he ends up snagging some of the best interviews of the film.
All three bring a larrikin humour to their antics, which propels the film from mere reportage to something more akin to attending a sporting event with 'the boys' These three characters enable you to get a feel for the real Tour de France.
Dan Jones' documentary debut provides a uniquely Australian perspective and follows the fortunes of the 2005 Tour de France and Lance Armstrong's amazing last ride.
Taking a layman-friendly approach, Detour de France introduces audiences to the nuances of the event explaining terminology, strategy and the mechanics of the race prologue and time trials.
Featuring interviews with cycling luminaries such as Lance Armstrong and Bernard Hinault, great insight from Phil Liggett, Robbie McEwen, Cadel Evans and Stuart O'Grady, plus appearances by assorted celebrities including director Ron Howard, singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow and presidential candidate John Kerry, Detour de France provides a fascinating insight into a classic sporting event. A brief visit to the renowned Moulin Rouge is sensational.
